Scope
1.1. This Specification describes the requirements for a laboratory gamma spectrometry system with a sodium iodide detector with integrated photomultiplier tube, high voltage power supply, lead shielding, multi-channel analyser, and associated cabling (the “System”).
1.2. The System shall be functional without further accessories for laboratory measurements of Cs-137 and other gamma-emitting radionuclides in food, feed and water samples for monitoring purposes.
1.3. The System shall be supplied to the End-User, the National Research Centre for Food Security at the Committee for Food Security under the Government of Tajikistan located in Dushanbe, Tajikistan under IAEA Technical Cooperation project TAD7003.
2. Definitions, Acronyms, and Abbreviations
The following definitions, acronyms, and abbreviations shall apply throughout this Specification unless defined otherwise hereinafter:
MCA: Multichannel Analyser
NaI(Tl) thallium-doped sodium iodide
PMT: Photomultiplier Tube
PC: personal computer
3. Requirements
3.1. Functional and Performance Requirements
The System shall meet the following functional and performance requirements:
3.1.1. The System shall comprise of the following items:
3.1.1.1. A scintillation detection unit complete with the following:
3.1.1.1.1. NaI(Tl) crystal of 63 mm diameter and 63 mm thickness;
3.1.1.1.2. Built in power supplies;
3.1.1.1.3. Photo-multiplier tube;
3.1.1.1.4. Analog/digital converter; and
3.1.1.1.5. A multi-channel analyzer with at least 1024 channels;
3.1.1.2. Lead shielding of at least 50 mm thickness;
3.1.1.3. Marinelli beakers of 1 L volume (100 pieces) and a geometry fitting to the detector;
3.1.1.4. Cylindrical containers of 0.1 L volume (100 pieces), suitable for use with the detector geometry;
3.1.1.5. A desktop personal computer; and
3.1.1.6. Acquisition and data analysis software;
3.1.2. The scintillation detector shall:
3.1.2.1. Provide a relative energy resolution of not more than 10% at the 662 keV peak of 137Cs;
3.1.2.2. Cover at least the energy range 200– 2800 keV; and
3.1.2.3. Provide minimum detectable activity of Cs-137 of 3 Bq/kg or less in 1 L Marinelli beaker for 6 hours measurement time;
3.1.3. The System shall provide temperature stabilization while measuring;
3.1.4. The System shall either be pre-calibrated for the provided geometries or able to be used without an additional calibration source;
3.1.5. The System shall allow the analysis of samples of different densities and compositions;
3.1.6. The permissible relative uncertainty of measurement shall be not more than 20% at 95% confidence level;
3.1.7. The System shall include a suitable lead shield coated on the outside with another metal or paint to prevent direct contact of lead with the skin;
3.1.8. The System shall include USB 2.0 (or higher) and/or Ethernet-based controls;
3.1.9. The System shall be supplied with all cabling necessary for the functioning of the System.
3.1.10. Dedicated acquisition and analysis software in the Russian language shall be provided. The software shall:
3.1.10.1. Communicate directly with the instrument and acquire data;
3.1.10.2. Display the acquired gamma spectrum in real time;
3.1.10.3. Allow the analysis of acquired gamma spectra including peak searching, peak area determination, isotope identification and calculation of activity concentration of radionuclides of interest using an integrated nuclide library
3.1.10.4. Be able to report the minimum detectable activity of a nuclide of interest in cases when no activity can be detected; and
3.1.10.5. Be preinstalled on the PC and provided on an external data storage medium (e.g. CD).
3.2. Technical Requirements
The System shall meet the following technical requirements:
3.2.1. The weight of the System including lead shielding (without PC) shall not be more than 170 kg;
3.2.2. The PC shall comply to the following specifications: at least Intel i7-6700 processor, at least 4 GB RAM, at least 200 GB Hard Disk; at least 3.2 GHz CPU; and USB and Ethernet interfaces.
3.2.3. The following accessories shall be provided with the PC: monitor; keyboard, mouse and a laser printer;
3.2.4. The Operating System installed on the PC shall be Windows 7 or Windows 10 in Russian language and fully compatible with analysis software;
3.2.5. All electrical equipment shall be compatible with the electricity supply of Tajikistan without special adaption: 220 V, 50 Hz; and
3.2.6. The System shall be operational at ambient temperatures covering at least the range between 10 °C and 35 °C.
4. Marking
The System shall have all safety markings in the Russian language.
